　SANJA MATSURI

   A legend syas that a thousand three years ago found

  a Kannon (Godess of Mercy) statuette caught in a fishing-net

  in the Sumida River on March 17 (May 17 by the solar calendar)

  and afterwards built a shrine and deoted it to Asakusa.

   SANJA MATSUURI, which is one of the Three Great Festivals

  of Edo (now Tokyo), is held on the third Saturday every May 

  by the Ujiko (inhabitants of the neighbourring commnuity)

  at Asakusa Shrine (previously called "SANJA Daigongen Shrine" or 

  "SANJA Myyojin Shrine"), sacred to the tutelary deity 

  of the locality forom of festibval was established

  in the Edo period (1603-1868).

   The parade of the portable shrines is conducted primarity 

  for the mutual amity of the Ujiko and the prosperity 

  of the commnunity but is also joined and enjoyed by the people 

  other than the Ujiko.
